There's something about standing with arms open wide...
I had an interesting conversation with a friend of mine. I say "interesting" because it was about relationships, something I really don't know much about. You see, I've never been in a "boyfriend/girlfriend-type" relationship. [I will explain all that in future posts, haha].
So after our conversation, I was driving home and as usual my mind starts coming up with things that I should have brought up earlier. It was mostly about God and just how Amazingly Awesome He is. It's kind of weird, but lately I've been having conversations with people about relationships. Different people are going through different things, but a reoccurring theme I've noticed was that people are just looking to be loved and accepted. It's sad to see that some people struggle to satisfy this desire with things that are inevitably going to bring them down. This I know because I do the same thing sometimes, sadly. However, the contrasting difference is that I have a personal relationship with a real God who loves me unconditionally, who pursues me endlessly, and who satisfies me completely.
As I was driving home while thoughts ran wild, this was what I was listening to:
The song is titled, "Arms Open Wide," by Hillsong. This song put me in a mood where I just had to quiet my heat a bit so I could internalize the message that was being sung. When you pay attention to the lyrics, it's talking about a complete surrender of yourself. It talks about a life totally in the hands of God, where our life is no longer yours to claim, but His alone! So, one little thing that God spoke to my heart was this, "How can you pursue a relationship that might not last when I'm standing right here, an Everlasting, Eternal, Unchanging, Faithful God?"
You see, how can we depend on things that won't hold up when we have a God who outlasts anything and everything! In relationships, especially broken ones, it is so hard to look beyond it. But we need to have the right perspective..on God! He is a rock that doesn't move or waver. He is strong and dependable. Here is a devotional I want to share with you:
This is generally what helped me keep my focus and direction on that vertical relationship--the one where God is my firm and secure foundation!

Fix your eyes on the Lord! Do it once. Do it daily. Do it ten thousand times ten thousand times. Do it constantly. When your schedule presses, when your prospects thin, when your hope burns low, when people disappoint you, when events turn against you, when dreams die, when the walls close in, when the prognosis seems grim, when your heart breaks, look at the Lord, and keep looking at Him."
"Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith." -Hebrews 12:2
"I trust in You, O Lord,...My times are in your hand." -Psalm 31:14-15
This is generally what helped me keep my focus and direction on that vertical relationship--the one where God is my firm and secure foundation!
