Random Acts of Kindness

So, I wanna share something I witnessed.

[And just so you know, before you read the rest of my entry, I'm currently on my Senior year taking an internship course at the Camillus House agency...specifically, with the ACT Team program. Camillus House is an agency that assists current/former homeless & low income individuals. The ACT Team works to find these homeless individuals permanent housing.]

Yesterday, I went with 2 clinicians from my agency to go to court for one of our clients. As we were waiting in the waiting area (which was full of people, by the way), one of the clinicians sat next to the client and talked about a few essential items they may currently need; one of which included the use of a grocery store gift card to be used for food. It so happens that as their discussion progressed, it turns out that the particular grocery store is not located in the client's area. The clinician then had to find out which was the closest store to the client's zip code.

The thing was that the waiting area was pretty much a quiet area, since not many people were talking, so when the clinician was talking on the phone, everyone in the room could hear what she was talking about. I'd look around the room and you can tell that some people try to pretend that they're not listening. After a few minutes on the phone with the frustration of not being able to find a location, a man (who was wearing a nice suit & had sat by other men in suits) walked up to the clinician and found her an address of the closest store in the area on his blackberry. The clinician was so grateful, thanked the man, and had given the information to the client.

Now, I know it may have sounded like a little thing that is no big deal. However, it's a reminder to me that not all people are selfish and/or self-centered. It takes courage, boldness, and lots of love and compassion to do a simple act of kindness...because you can't depend on everyone to do that. In a room with more than 20 people, one had the audacity to take that first step! Will you do the same?
